This raucous frolic is the seventh in Dvořák’s second set of Slavonic Dances op. 72. This particular dance is subtitled Kolo, which is a highly virtuosic Slavic circle dance. This virtuosity certainly carries over into Dvořák’s musical interpretation of the dance; the two fast and furious outer sections sandwich a more sultry minor middle section. In this arrangement by Bassoonist Catriona McDermid, the fun is shared equally between all 8 bassoon parts, making it the perfect punchy party piece for experienced players.
