C006 Coates: The Dambusters March

*NEW* This famous March with its iconic theme and soaring countermelodies was originally written by Eric Coates as an exercise in emulating the form of Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches. He disliked writing film music, and when asked by the producers of The Dambusters to provide a title piece he at first refused, but upon hearing it was a film of 'national importance' he relented. This arrangement for flute choir gives everyone a chance to enjoy their moment of grandeur, and is a really good blow!

C007 Cork: Through The Looking Glass

*NEW* Peter Cork (1926-2012) was a British Composer who, after training as a music teacher, went on to study composition with Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music. He enjoyed a long career as a well respected teacher and composer, with Dudley Moore famously amongst his students. His love of film music is very evident in this little suite, with its sweeping tunes, lush 'English' harmonies and twinkling humour. Although the three movements, Prelude - Into the dream, Jabberwocky, and Humpty Dumpty are full of contrasting character, the latter two movements sometimes draw on themes from the first movement, giving a filmic coherence to this charming set.

G005: Grieg: In The Hall Of The Mountain King

This is perhaps Grieg's most famous composition, and comes from the first Peer Gynt suite. It was originally a piece of incidental music to accompany the scene in Ibsen's play where Peer ventures into the Mountain King's hall, finding himself surrounded by trolls, gnomes and goblins chanting 'slay him!'. It starts with a slow and sinister melody on the alto flute that repeats through all the parts, building to a thrilling climax . It is also famous as the music from the Alton Towers adverts!

SH006 Sherwin: Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square

*NEW* A most romantic and charming setting of the famous song. This arrangement was commissioned by a customer whose pupils played it as she waltzed down the aisle! A solo flute sings cheerfully above the choir texture; in a larger group this may be played by one of the first flutes, or shared convivially between several players.

TR003 Trad: Two Northumbrian Tunes

"The Waters of Tyne" describes two lovers separated by the rough waters of the river Tyne.. a solo flute starts the melody from the back of the hall, gradually passing the tune to the rest of the group. "Elsie Marley" is a lusty dance depicting an alewife of dubious reputation, and features energetic tutti sections interspersed with various versions and variations of the folk tune. This pair of pieces would suit a group of intermediate to advanced players.

TR004 Trad.: Ding Dong Merrily!

*FOR CHRISTMAS* This is in fact a setting of two 15th Century French tunes which are now commonly associated with Christmas: "Ding Dong Merrily On High" and "Noël Nouvelet". The piece begins with the tune set in rather a medieval style, but quickly develops with exciting quaver conversations between the parts. In the second tune the altos and basses take the lead, with the flutes adding lush harmonies and sparkling interjections that call back the feeling of the first tune and lead to an exciting conclusion. The two separate flute choirs should ideally be placed at either side of the stage, or even at the front and back of the hall to make the most of the antiphonal effects throughout the piece.
